Munjimup was named after the Noongar dialect, ‘Manjin’ (a broad leafed edible reed) and ‘up’ (a meeting place, or place of). A timber cutter by the name of Thomas Muir settled in the area around 1856 but it wasn’t declared a town until 1910.
Still known for its forestry industry, it became heavily populated following the war. The Group Settlement Scheme was in full effect when inexperienced farmers couldn’t do a lot with the dense forests of the Manjimup area and eventually moved on. Those that were left became dairy farmers but that too ended during the Great Depression of the 1930’s.
