Summer road trip preparations
Driving tips for your next weekend away
Taking to the open road with family and friends over the weekends and school holiday breaks can be a welcome and enjoyable escape. But it can also mean long distances spent traveling in your car, SUV or 4WD. Particularly if you’re planning a trip that is longer than 2 or 3 hours, take a moment to look over these simple tips to get yourself road trip ready!
Have you planned your trip?
To make your experience stress free, it’s a good idea to plan your trip in advance. That way, you can be sure to map out suitable rest and fuel stops, find accommodation that suits your budget and make the most of any nearby sightseeing opportunities. Take a moment to download any important maps or information before heading off, just in case you experience poor, or non-existent, mobile phone coverage!
While researching your trip, you may discover areas of rougher terrain. If you are interested in 4WDing, make sure your tyres are suited to the task. It’s important that you are aware of the capabilities of your vehicle (and tyres) beforehand to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip for you and your passengers.
How are your tyres looking?
A visual inspection of your tyres is quick and easy to do. Look for signs of cracks, bulges and gouges. If you notice any, these could result in a slow leak and may cause a blowout, which no one wants to experience, especially when you are trying to enjoy a road trip getaway!
See if you can notice any signs of uneven tyre wear. If you do, this could be the result of a few different things, such as under or overinflated tyres, or possibly a bad wheel alignment.
How is the tread looking? There are several ways to read the tread depth of your tyres. Before heading off on a holiday, ensure that your tyres offer good tread life to see you there and back safely.
If you have any concerns after doing a visual inspection of your tyres, get in contact with your local Tyrepower store. Our qualified technicians will be able to inspect your tyres and advise you of a suitable course of action.
Is your car’s service schedule up-to-date?
Can you recall when you last had your car serviced? Maintaining regular servicing keeps your car in good, reliable mechanical condition. It is also a good way to prevent more costly repairs at a later date, as a result of leaving more minor issues unfixed.
If your family car, 4WD or SUV is due for a service, contact your local Tyrepower store to schedule an appointment. When embarking on a road trip, it is always good peace of mind to know that your vehicle is serviced, safe and performing at its best.
Do any car fluids need topping up?
Vehicle fluids include wiper, brake, steering, engine and radiator fluids. All of these require checking on a regular basis. You can do this yourself by referring to your owner’s manual for information that is specific to your vehicle, or the friendly professionals at your local Tyrepower store can do this for you.
